How to Make Passion Fruit Juice

So as you know by now, I make my weekly trip to the fruit store and this week for $.40 I found six passion fruit or ‘maracuya’. Feel free to check out last time’s guava nectar, and curuba juice which turned out to be total hits.

There are several kinds of passion fruit and it seems the most common ones around here are the large grapefruit size yellow maracuya’s, or P. edulis var. flavicarpa. Passion fruit is native to Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina but is readily found all over South America.

Fresh passion fruit is tangy and sweet, containing high amounts of vitamin C, dietary fiber, B vitamins and other wonderful things which gives you the green light to go ahead and indulge. It’s unique flavor blends well with many desserts. Here in Colombia, it is a commonly used fruit, especially in juices, desserts and cocktails.

But as always, I like to juice my fruit. So this week for a whooping $.40, I got six ripe passion fruit. Passion fruit wrinkles when ripe which let me know me these puppies were ready for consumption.

Unfortunately, this time as big as a fruit might be there was actually not much meat inside and so with six big fruit I was only able to make half the amount of juice I usually do. If you can pick your fruit, make sure they feel heavy, which let’s you know there’s more pulp inside.

Nonetheless it was still delicious!

INGREDIENTS | Yields .5 Liters

  • 6 Passion Fruit
  • Water and Sugar

RECIPE

Step 1: Cut the thick carcass of the fruit in half and scoop out the seeds into the blender.

Step 2: Add as much water as there is pulp (half and half ). You can add more water later if you prefer it a bit more watered down.

Step 3: Add 1 tablespoon of sugar for a drink that’s not too sweet. The sugar also cuts through the acidity. To make it sweeter add 3 tablespoons.

Step 4: Blend for no more than 10 seconds

Step 5: Strain into a container and enjoy! Adjust with water and sugar according to taste.
