An escape to La Chorrera Waterfall is perfect for a hiking day to get away from Bogotá.
Just one hour away from Bogotá, La Chorrera Adventure Park provides a perfect escape from the city. Located in the town of Choachi, La Chorrera waterfall hiking trail consists of a beautiful 3-hour guided trek through two waterfalls, one of which is Colombia’s tallest (and the six tallest in South America) standing at 590 meters tall. The trek takes place in the Andean cloud forest, (and what is a cloud forest?) a forest at such a high altitude it is covered by clouds!
I was so excited to go to my first cloud forest, I wrote down all the essentials on everything you need to know to make your adventure through la Chorrera waterfall hiking trail unforgettable!
Sundays and holidays through guided tours ONLY: 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 2:00 PM
By car:
Through the circunvalar, we went through the EGIPTO neighborhood uphill via el Sanctuario de la Virgen Guadalupe, and continuing on this way, the road will take you straight to Choachi. After about 27 kilometers, you will find a huge sign indicating la Chorrera on a downward dirt path on the left side of the road. It is relatively well indicated, but don’t hesitate to stop and ask several times along the way to be sure you are headed in the right direction.
If you are driving, I am guessing you are with a local, therefore, here are some alternative routes to go by.
Parking is available at the entrance of la Chorrera for $5,000 for the whole day.
By bus
Bus companies TRANSORIENTE and TRANSFOMOMEQUE depart to Choachi from Avenida Caracas with Calle 60. I did not find any fixed timetables so just ask around when you get there and you should be fine.
The hike takes place at altitudes of 2320-2480 meters, meaning that you will run out of breath after 5 minutes. But on a more serious note, the altitude means that despite your hard efforts, it will still be chilly, and as you are hiking through a cloud forest, it will be very humid.
humidity + chilly weather = bone-sinking cold
Yes, there are moments where you might work up a sweat, but other times you will get chilly. Another point to note is that it’s very muddy and it can get slippery! With all this is mind, be sure to bring:
-Hiking shoes or sneakers (shoes with good traction)
-Comfortable pants
-A windbreaker
-A light sweater
$8.000 per person. Includes tour guide (obligatory)
You are welcome to bring your own sandwiches and water bottles. However, you will find a humble restaurant right next to the first waterfall (a few hundred meters from the entrance) with generous portions and appetizing meals including a large protein, a carb or two, salad, juice and dessert for $8,000 or $15,000. Not bad if you ask me!
You can camp about 300 meters away from the first waterfall, surrounded by nature. The camping site includes bathrooms, showers, BBQ grill, light, drinkable water and FREE parking.
You should however, bring your own tents, sleeping gear, food and whatever else you think you might need.
The cost is $8,000 per person/per night.
The park of la Chorrera offers 1 and 2-day packages including activities such as camping, rappelling, horseback riding, exploring and more. For additional information or to make a reservation, please contact the park directly.
