30 Colombian Snacks (Mecato) That Will Make You Miss Home
Mecato, is the Colombian term for all those finger-licking Colombian snacks you’ll find being sold on street carts. Eaten at any time of the day, to many Colombians abroad, Colombian snacks (mecato) bring back fond childhood memories and rituals.
Whatever your favorite Colombian snack may be, there’s that one food item that brings you back to a special moment in time.
In case you forgot, let me stir up the dust with a list of 30 popular Colombian snacks that will hopefully bring back happy memories and put a smile on your face.
Equivalent to the American Starburst.
Peanuts with a crunchy batter on the outside. This is also a popular Asian snack.
A Twinkie on steroids, with jelly that accompanies the creamy filling and covered in chocolate.
Yellow cake with chocolate covering.
Like American Fritos.
Cheese Rings Puffs.
Cheese balls without the orange powder of cheese puffs.
White and Milk chocolate dips.
Bite size corn chips.
A mix of plantains chips, potato chips and chicharron.
11. Chocolatinas jet
Most popular chocolate bar in Colombia. Equivalent to Hershey’s in the U.S.

Literally Foot Jelly mixed with panela and cinnamon. Take a look at how it’s made here.
U.S Pop rocks in powder form.
Guava Paste. Typically served with fresh cheese cubes.
Cheese, caramel or butter popcorn.
Actually Venezuelan but very popular in Colombia, it’s a coconut wafer cookie.
Starbursts in stick form. In France they have the same called Carambar.
Similar to Dulce de Leche.
20. Tosti Arepa
Arepa chips. Thin and crispy. Yum!
21. Coffee delight
Coffee-flavored caramels. Come in hard and soft versions.
22. Almendras francesas
Candy covered almonds. This is come from the French dragées which are typically found in weddings and baptisms. The Colombian version have a thicker coat of sugar around them. Careful with your teeth when consuming this Colombian snack!
23. Turrón de SuperCoCo
Coconut Caramel. Definitely one of my favorite mecato colombiano.
Panela Sugar Cookies.
24. Avena Alpina
Cinnamon Oatmeal Shake. Another one of my favorite mecato colombiano.
Thick yogurt custard. Similar to the French ‘Petit Suisse’. Ok so this is also a favorite mecato colombiano of mine.
Yogurt with marmalade. Another favorite.
29. Dulce de Panela
Copelia is an example of panelita with coconut. Because everything is better with coconut 😉
It’s not what it sound like. It’s just a wafer cookie with arequipe and bocadillo!
